Taken from Thomson Reuters, Mar 2010:
A risk free interest rate is the internal rate of return that can be obtained by investing in a financial instrument without or limited credit risk. Normally this will relate to a short term investment in a financial instrument backed by the government. In general the yield on 3-month treasury bills is recommended as the best instrument to use for any analysis involving risk free rates.
Disclaimer: You may want to further consult your Professor for his definition of risk free interest rates.
