Sure, some databases have a web interface where you can specify your requirements and then download the data in excel, CSV, or other formats. However, these web interfaces often impose a download limit or may not provide the filters you needed (e.g. you want to specify a date range, but the interface doesn't offer this). If you're working with a large amount of data, the resulting download file can be large and, therefore, slow to open and process. Sometimes, you may need to manually repeat the process and download multiple files, which can get tedious.  

Using API is helpful if you work with a large amount of data, as you can automate the download/retrieval process.
