Currently, SMU Libraries does not have a subscription for geocoding tools or API. There are a few geocoding tools that you can try, such as:

  • Nominatim API - Nominatim is an open-source address search engine that is developed and maintained by the OpenStreetMap community. It provides an API for geocoding that is free to use, but do take note on the usage policy of the API here. The policy imposes usage limit of "No heavy uses (an absolute maximum of 1 request per second)".
  • Mapbox Geocoding API - This API is free up to 100,000 request for Temporary Geocoding API (primarily used for searching).
  • Google Maps Geocoding API - This API is on a pay-as-you-go pricing model, starting with USD 5 per month for every 1000 API request.

Most geocoding APIs out there should be able to do forward geocoding (converts addresses into geographic coordinates) and reverse geocoding (converts geographic coordinates to addresses).

More GIS tools and resources are available in this research guide.
